Business Deep Dive Lyon: Albert School’s Immersive Data Experience

What is a Business Deep Dive (BDD)?
A Business Deep Dive is a total immersion in the world of data, where students analyse real-life cases using genuine datasets supplied by our partner companies. Unique to Albert School, this initiative lets our bachelor students in Lyon put into practice—over one month—the full range of data and business skills acquired during their programme. Working in teams, they confront varied business issues and present strategic recommendations to seasoned decision-makers.
How often do students take part in these simulations?
Organised eight times a year for bachelor students and twice a year for work-study master students, each Business Deep Dive has its own flavour: diverse requests, datasets of varying size and complexity, and therefore the chance to apply and extend a broad spectrum of analytical and strategic skills. Repeated throughout the year, this flagship programme at Albert School Lyon is a true skills accelerator for future data-analytics experts.

- Data-driven competition: results are delivered as a dynamic pitch before company executives.
What does a BDD immersion look like?
Step 1: Kick-off and challenge definition
Each Business Deep Dive Lyon starts with a presentation of the business challenge set by the partner company. Students explore the dataset, define the stakes and set objectives. This exchange between students and professionals is crucial to refine the brief and gauge the company’s issues.

Step 2: Data exploration and analysis
This key phase is split into two major stages:
1. Data preparation:
Understand and structure datasets: examine data sources, grasp their structure and identify key variables.
Handle missing values: detect gaps and decide on deletion, imputation, etc.
Correct errors and detect anomalies: clean outliers and inconsistent formats to secure a reliable base.
Detect outliers and normalise variables: smooth extreme points to improve model performance.
2. Advanced analysis and modelling:
Explore key trends: descriptive statistics and visualisations to spot overall patterns and relationships.
Statistical and ML modelling: apply predictive or explanatory models to draw precise insights and enhance decision-making.
Visualise insights with Python and Power BI: present findings clearly and convincingly.
Step 3: Results presentation and recommendations
Albert School Lyon students produce a detailed analytical report and craft a compelling pitch to convince the partner company of their recommendations. After the presentations, one team is declared the winner, receives a prize and enjoys extra visibility with recruiters.

- Soft-skill development: public speaking and the ability to highlight key project points; collaborative project-management experience vital for inter-departmental data-analysis roles.
- Unique networking opportunities with recruiters and sector experts: direct dialogue with data specialists and potential internships for high-performing teams.
